Brother of Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja 'framed love rival with terror plot'

Arsalan Khawaja - the brother of Pakistani-born batsman Usman Khawaja - was arrested by counter-terror investigators in Parramatta, west of Sydney, on Tuesday morning.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported police were not alleging Arsalan Khawaja meant to carry out terrorist attacks but that he tampered with the laptop to frame a colleague, 25-year-old PhD student Mohamed Nizamdeen.

However, authorities dropped all charges against the 25-year-old PhD student in a surprising about-face in October, when a handwriting expert found there was no "conclusive" proof that the writing in the notebook was Nizamdeen's.

It did not appear from the charges that the list was linked to any credible assassination plots.

Khawaja's colleague Mohamed Kamer Nilar Nizamdeen spent four weeks in Goulburn's Supermax jail after being charged with creating a document in connection with preparing for a terrorist act.

"What we will be alleging is that he (Nizamdeen) was set up in a planned and calculated manner".

Khawaja has been taken to the Parramatta police area command where police said he would be questioned in relation to an alleged attempt to pervert justice, and forgery by making a false document.

In August, police charged a Sri Lankan student in Sydney over an alleged plan in a notebook about killing Australian politicians. "But, really, the person who is responsible for what occurred to him is the person we're alleging manufactured this document", Assistant Police Commissioner Mick Willing told reporters in Sydney.

Willing confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Australian police now say they "regret" arresting Nizamdeen.

Usman Khawaja is expected to line up for Australia in the first Test against India, starting in Adelaide on Thursday.

Police will hold a press conference at 12.30pm.

Usman Khawaja has asked for privacy for him and his family.

"It is a matter for police to deal with".

The cricketer said: "Out of respect for the process it'd be inappropriate for me to make any further comments".
