100m Quora users’ data stolen by hackers

Popular Q&A site Quora suffered a security breach last week with a malicious third party gaining unauthorised access to the site's systems.

Nevertheless, the "update" is in actuality a major data breach affecting users of the question-and-answer website - 100 million people, to be exact.

Quora first realised it had been compromised on Friday and immediately began investigating.

Quora, like many sites today, offer the option to log in with a Google or Facebook account, which may have been the "linked networks" that their blog is referring to.

You can't exactly get a sense of the severity of the data breach that Quora disclosed late Monday, which came in the form of a blog post from CEO Adam D'Angelo titled "Quora Security Update".

Quora users that were affected by the breach can expect an email from the website, outlining all of the relevant details. Anonymously authored questions and answers were reportedly not affected by the breach, and the company said it doesn't store information from anonymous users.

Account information, e.g.name, email address, encrypted (hashed) password, data imported from linked networks when authorized by users.

Quora said it's highly unlikely that the hack will lead to identity theft as the site does not collect sensitive personal information such as credit card or social security numbers. The company said people should change their passwords if they use the same ones across different services. Quora has been sending out emails to users explaining what happened and steps being taken, such as the fact that the users have been logged out of their accounts and their passwords invalidated. "We will continue to work both internally and with our outside experts to gain a full understanding of what happened and take any further action as needed".
