Oprah’s mother Vernita Lee dies on Thanksgiving Day aged 83

However, Oprah says her relationship with her mom was rocky because of a long separation.

Her mother, Vernita Lee, died on Thanksgiving Day.

Lee passed away in her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 22, the family told People in a statement.

The spokeswoman said private funeral services were held.

No other details were given.

After meeting Vernon Winfrey, Vernita welcomed her first child in rural MS at the age of 18. She could not raise Oprah, herself, as she moved to Milwaukee to work as a housemaid.

Winfrey had a strained relationship with Lee, but encouraged fans to embrace their families in an Oprah's Lifeclass in 2013.

Lee is also survived by her daughter Patricia, whom she gave up for adoption at birth.

Her brother Jeffrey died of AIDS in 1989, and Patricia, who died in 2003.

Oprah had two half-siblings on her mother's side. Winfrey was raised living between her mum, father Vernon Winfrey, and grandmother throughout her life.

"I walked into that space feeling completely alone and abandoned".

When asked the moment she felt the most pride for Winfrey's achievements, she cited the star's multi-Oscar nominated film The Colour Purple. "I don't really even know my mother", Winfrey told HuffPost in a 2015 interview.

"I was asking the question".

Lee is survived by her daughters as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
