General Motors To Slash 14,700 Jobs In North America, Including In Baltimore

GM is cutting more than 6,300 hourly and salaried workers at its plants and 15 per cent of the salaried workers in North America for a total of more than 14,000.

All of the products now being assembled at those three plants are expected to stop being produced by the end of 2019.

The likely shutdowns have already opened up GM to political pushback, Bloomberg reports, with the USA plants in places that have been economically devastated by job losses and pressure on wages for decades.

Jerry Dias, president of Unifor, the Canadian labour union, said he "will vigorously fight again to maintain these good-paying auto jobs".

Twenty years ago the Valley backed the "Bring It Home" campaign which helped to bring the Cobalt to Lordstown and saved the plant from closing.

But Trump told the Wall Street Journal: 'They better damn well open a new plant very quickly'.

"Contributing to the cash savings of approximately $6 billion are cost reductions of $4.5 billion and a lower capital expenditure annual run rate of nearly $1.5 billion", GM said in a statement.

"The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future", said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra.

President Donald Trump has long promised to boost the USA auto industry and bring manufacturing jobs back home.

In October, GM offered buyouts to 18,000 white-collar workers as part of a cost-cutting initiative. He says he told the company that the USA has done a lot for GM and that if its cars aren't selling, the company needs to produce ones that will. GM said its slimmed down production plan would allow it to share technology across all of its vehicles, reducing the amount of time and labor it takes to build cars.

Barra explained that GM is restructuring now, "while the company and the economy are strong, to stay in front of a fast-changing market".

One could argue that it's not a direct line from Trump's tariffs to GM's announcement Monday.

The automaker said the plant is now operating at half capacity and has been hit by the "significant shift in buying patterns away from cars to favour trucks and SUVs".

GM plans to halt production next year at three assembly plants: the Lordstown small-car factory near Youngstown, Ohio; the Detroit-Hamtramck complex in Detroit; and the Oshawa, Ontario, assembly complex near Toronto. "I urged GM to at least reallocate some of the production and employees to the Toledo GM plant", he said in the statement. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly ahead of the announcement.

The cuts come on the heels of surprisingly strong third-quarter earnings.

Furthermore, GM will be halting production at several of its factories and plants throughout Ohio, Michigan, and Maryland.

In 2015, assembly of the Chevrolet Camaro in Oshawa ended and in 2016, assembly of both the Chevrolet Impala and Equinox came to an end.

Among the plants that could shut is the Detroit/Hamtramck assembly plant - which makes low-demand vehicles such as the Chevrolet Impala and the Buick LaCrosse. Ohio Gov. John Kasich called it "painful to see this happen to the plant's workers", noting the plant had been working with GM for more than 50 years. Canada and Ontario also backed a 2005 investment by GM to modernize the Oshawa plant's paint shop.
