Sebastian Vettel found himself in a familiar situation at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, trailing Lewis Hamilton in the season-ending race, and the Ferrari driver, as was the case in the championship tussle this year, was unable to find a way to beat his Mercedes rival...

Retirement-bound Alonso finished just outside the points positions for McLaren as the two-time champion taking 11th in his 311th and final GP.

Hamilton's win was aided by Kimi Raikkonen, in his final race for Ferrari, breaking down on the start straight, promoting a virtual safety auto period while his machine was moved.

Last night's Abu Dhabi F1 victor and this season's champion, Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel's one word reply of "Botox?" was followed up by Verstappen jokingly saying "I might start with that yeah!"

"Listen, you're black, I'm black nobody gonna know the difference".

"Well he's the champion and he deserves to be the champion".

"It's been a tough year and I tried until the last lap".

In a race that had little excitement or action, nearly the only real moment of note came on the first lap when the Haas auto of Grosjean and Renault of Hulkenberg came together.

After the race, Hamilton stood atop of the podium, like he has numerous times this season, but what he did afterwards was rather different.

Hulkenberg was flipped after contact with Romain Grosjean at Turn 9, with the Renault rolling twice before coming to rest upside down against the barrier.

"When you have an accident like that the radio from the vehicle is automatically routed to race control so we get immediate information", he revealed. "There's fire. There's fire". Hulkenberg could not climb out of the auto from that position and had to wait for marshals to turn it over before climbing out himself, but Whiting says the Halo was only beneficial in the circumstances.

The race was red-flagged as a Safety Car was deployed, re-starting after five laps with Hamilton resuming as leader.

Hulkenberg had said he felt and was "hanging like a cow" before he was rescued.

On resumption, Hamilton pulled 1.2 seconds clear while Verstappen fought back after falling to 10th. Mercedes smartly seized the moment to whip Hamilton in for a "free" change of tyres while the race was anaesthetised.

Hamilton then took the chance to praise the young driver.
