The race for Florida governor appears headed for a recount, as Democrat Andrew Gillum continues to gain on Republican Ron DeSantis during the tallying of the final uncounted ballots cast in the midterm elections.

Under Florida state law, a candidate running for office can declare victory if the margin of votes is greater than 0.5 percent of the total vote.

If the gap between candidates is half a percentage point or less, the state is mandated to conduct a machine recount. Both counties are considered areas rich in Democratic votes.

Broward also experienced an "unusual undervote pattern", Elias said. "And the Broward Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes has a history of acting in bad faith", he said.

There is zero chance that a recount will reverse a gap in the ranges of either the senate or gubernatorial races.

The Associated Press has called the governor's race for DeSantis.

Scott's campaign has said Nelson should concede the race rather than push for a recount.

"This race is over", Scott spokesman Chris Hartline said Wednesday.

Nelson has not conceded.

'This is obviously not the result Senator Nelson's campaign has worked hard for, ' the Democrat's campaign manager Pete Mitchell said just after midnight.

In the race for the governor's mansion between former GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis and his Democratic opponent, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, DeSantis now leads Gillum 49.62 percent to 49.15 percent, a 0.47 percent margin - or 38,501 votes. The Florida vote was ultimately settled in Bush's favor by a margin of 537 votes when the U.S. Supreme Court, in Bush v. Gore, stopped a recount that had been initiated on a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court. "Since that time, it has become clear there are many more uncounted ballots than was originally reported". Dana Young, R-Tampa, trailed Democratic challenger Janet Cruz on Wednesday morning by a margin of 50.07 percent to 49.93 percent, the state Division of Elections website showed.

Florida law mandates a recount if the margin falls under 0.5%.

After the leads by Republican candidates began to shrink to levels that could force recounts, the president on Friday joined in the partisan attack against Snipes, tweeting in part that Broward County has "miraculously started finding Democrat votes".

"If this is the cause of lost votes, it is incredibly frustrating that somehow the state hasn't gotten it's act together to make sure ballots are designed in a way that don't cause lost votes". As of Thursday afternoon, DeSantis led Gillum by 0.47 of a percentage point.

Provisional ballots are given to voters because their eligibility to vote is challenged for some reason - perhaps they have an address discrepancy, or they forgot their ID. Bill Nelson, took legal action Thursday night against Broward County for failing to provide information about ballots that have been counted.

He was likely referring to Marc Elias, the lawyer Nelson's campaign has reportedly tapped to handle the recount effort, as Elias was also a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's campaign and was involved in commissioning that dossier of opposition research from Fusion GPS. In the other counties, paper ballots are filled in by voters and scanned by machine for initial and automatic recounts.
