Trump administration moves to crack down on asylum claims

Donald Trump, the United States president, said on Friday he has signed an immigration proclamation, an order that would help effectively ban migrants who cross the USA border with Mexico illegally from qualifying for asylum.

But the administration official argued that "what we're attempting to do is trying to funnel credible fear claims, or asylum claims, through the ports of entry where we are better resourced". Instead, thanks to the Democratic Party's insistence on open borders, a dysfunctional system was created where people who sneaked into the country and got caught already in the United States were allowed to retroactively claim they were asylum seekers.

The Trump administration moved Thursday to order a sweeping new change meant to limit asylum claims by immigrants seeking to come to the U.S.

An ACLU spokesman tweeted: "FACT: US law specifically allows individuals to apply for asylum whether or not they are at a port of entry".

Trump's proclamation puts into practice regulations adopted by immigration officials on Thursday.

The push comes after President Donald Trump railed during the final weeks of the campaign about "caravan after caravan" making its way to the border through Mexico.

Immigration was Trump's main issue in 2016 and he believes it won him the election. Since 2014, asylum claims at the border have increased fourfold, adding to a backlog of more than 750,000 pending cases in USA immigration courts. Trump's recently departed attorney general Jeff Session announced a policy change at his Justice Department to deny survivors of domestic abuse and gang violence asylum claims, which could further curtail the success rate.

The new rule is nearly certain to be challenged in courts.

"There are multiple responsibilities at a port of entry and you can't simply move all of your resources to migrant processing", said one border official.

The United States regularly sends Mexican undocumented entrants back across the border to their country, but has had difficulties gaining cooperation to repatriate Hondurans, Salvadorans and Guatemalans.

"These restrictions are illegal - asylum is a legal right regardless of how someone enters the country", RAICES, an immigrant legal services organisation in Texas, said in a statement.

It's unclear how many people en route to the U.S.in the current caravans will even make it to the border. By 2023, the Center for Immigration Studies estimates that the legal and illegal immigrant population of the USA will make up almost 15 percent of the entire US population. The migrants are largely poor people and many say they're fleeing violence; more than 1,700 were children under 18, and more than 300 were children under age 5.
