Google Brings an API to Let Developers Push In-App Updates

Originally created to help Android users in certain countries that do not have a lot of storage on their mobile devices, the app was quickly adopted worldwide.

Google announced today that their Android Files Go storage app is being rebranded to the new name of Files by Google and that in less than a year, they have 30 million monthly users all over the world.

In the meantime, Google published "Android Enterprise Security", a white paper detailing the new enterprise-centric security features that have been added to Android after Pie's release in August.

For example, the percentage of Android devices that contain at least one potentially harmful application (PHA) -the term Google uses for Android malware- is above the 0.5 percent figure for Android devices running KitKat (4.x), Lollipop (5.x), and Marshmallow (6.x), but it's way smaller for newer OS versions. Immediate displays a full-screen message right when a player boots up an Android app that prompts them to update the app. This allows users to open and use an app while the update downloads in the background.

What Cuthbertson is referring to is the In-App Updates API, which gives developers two new ways to update their apps: immediate and flexible. If you want to find and download Files by Google for the first time, you'll just need to search "Files by Google" in the Google Play app store (or just click that link at the start of this sentence). The In-app Updates API is being tested with Android's early access partners, and will soon be distributed to all developers.

Overall, it's a good package of announcements that Google went live at Android Developers summit.
