Bryce Harper appears headed to the Phillies

Looks like they want to get the bad taste of Dexter Fowler's deal out of their mouth and throw some more money to big-name free agents!

The minute the Boston Red Sox closed out the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the World Series, the eyes of the baseball world turned to a free agent class that features two of the biggest names in the sport: Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.

But people familiar with the offer also indicate that it is now off the table, an offer meant to capitalise on the Nationals' exclusive negotiating rights with Harper that stood for five weeks until he officially became a free agent.

Harper rejected a 10-year offer worth $300 million from the Nationals late this past season.

Harper in the middle of that lineup could certainly help the team break its three-year playoff drought. The deal did not include a no-trade clause, per the same report.

"He's shown the type of player he is and now he's a grizzled veteran", Rizzo said.

He has 10 years left on a 13-year, $325 million contract where he'll be making between $26 million and $32 million every year through the 2028 season. It may not have been. It will cost them roughly $US13 million. He may not get that much - or at least not that many years - but it does seem that there's been an effort from Harper's camp to shift the overton window on just how much Harper could ultimately earn this offseason.

Part of the thought in signing Harper would be that you may be paying for his peak. He led the league in home runs, runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS in 2015 when he won the AL MVP award.

Many in the industry believe star outfielder Bryce Harper's final destination for next season will come no sooner than the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next month.
