Voters in Minnesota and MI elected the first two Muslim women to serve in the U.S. Congress, a former refugee who fled Somalia's civil war and a Detroit-born Palestinian-American.

Democrats Sharice Davids of Kansas and Deb Haaland of New Mexico will be the first Native American women who are members of the US House of Representatives. She campaigned on keeping taxes low (South Dakota is one of a few states with no income tax), cutting government spending, and introducing more government transparency. But the Republicans have tightened its hold on the Senate with 51 candidates so far winning seats.

Democrat Mike Espy, who will face Mississippi Republican Representative Cindy Hyde-Smith in a December runoff, could become the state's first black senator since Reconstruction.

There was also a historic gender gap that showed women more supportive of Democrats than Republicans.

But as many more women ran, it was perhaps inevitable that many more would lose, as well.

Beyond the election night tallies, female candidates also shattered long-held gender stereotypes about how women should run for office. The President made three visits to the state for her.

According to figures tallied by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers, 428 women ran for Congress or governor as Democrats, compared with 162 Republicans.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, one of the Democrats who is considering the 2020 race, said that the two years since Trump ascended to the White House had ushered a new generation of women into public life.

Still other women broke with convention and shared heart-wrenching stories of sexual abuse.

Nearly 80% of voters in a CNN exit poll said it's very or somewhat important that more women and racial minorities be elected to public office, with two-thirds of white voters agreeing. But Finkenauer is a few months older and will turn 30 about a week before they're sworn in January 3, 2019.
