Pentagon balked at US border troops building detention facilities

The Trump administration discussed using the us military to build facilities to house detained migrants as part of its new mission on the Mexican border but the idea was dropped after the Pentagon expressed doubts about it, USA officials said.

Trump has said the total number of troops could climb as high as 15,000, which CSBA calculates the price tag to be at approximately $90 million to $110 million.

The migrants hope to regroup in the capital, seeking medical care and rest while they await stragglers.

Soldiers participating in "Operation Faithful Patriot" are working with US Customs and Border Patrol officers to install the fending, according to the Department of Defense. That doesn't mean shoot them. They do that with us, they're going to be arrested, there are going to be problems.

The officials' disclosure notably illustrates a certain tension within the White House over using military resources to step up security at the border against undocumented immigrants, which was highly prioritized in President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign. It was reported that although such a request was sent to the Pentagon by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), it did not even reach the top brass and was rejected early on. It's not clear if Mattis weighed in on the decision to reject the request for troops to perform law enforcement functions.

According to CNN, Dunford said the troops would be providing logistical support to the DHS, explaining, "so you'll see some soldiers down there right now that are putting up concertina wire and reinforcing the points of entry".

Customs and Border Protection declined to comment. The untrained volunteers plan to dig in along border spots with camouflage clothing, flak jackets, semiautomatic weapons, night-vision goggles and aerial drones with thermal sensing equipment to locate people in darkness, McGauley said. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

One US official cautioned that a previous Trump administration request dating back to the spring for national guard troops to build facilities for migrants on military bases was still being deliberated.

More than 5,000 troops stationed along the U.S. -Mexico border will not receive additional compensation for working in a risky environment, known as "danger pay", a Pentagon official said Tuesday. As many as 8,000 troops, if not more depending on operational demands, could eventually be deployed to the border in support of Operation Faithful Patriot.

Retired Gen. Martin Dempsey, who served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2011 to 2015, tweeted Friday that "our men and women in uniform are better trained, better equipped, and better led so they meet any threat with confidence". Between 750 to 1,000 of those forces are Marines from Camp Pendleton.

Asked about the cost of the operation, Manning said it had yet to be determined by the Pentagon's financial services. They stay for a specified period of time has cost the country's budget of 103 million US dollars. Approximately 4,800 troops have been deployed with 5,200 expected to be in place by the end of the day.
