Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns at Trump's request

President Donald Trump's pick to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions and oversee special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation has sharply criticized the probe in the past.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions submitted his resignation letter to President Donald Trump on November 7, according to reports.

The President was furious when Mr Sessions recused himself from investigations into Russia's possible meddling in U.S. elections and collusion with the Trump campaign, paving the way for the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Muller.

However, his decision to recuse himself from directing the special investigation into the 2016 election by Robert Mueller earned him the president's ire, and it was something Trump came back to time and again over the a year ago in interviews and on social media, sometimes belittling Sessions in the process.

"We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!" the president added.

"If he were to continue to investigate the financial relationships without a broadened scope in his appointment, then this would raise serious concerns that the special counsel's investigation was a mere witch hunt", Whitaker said. Democrats worry that firing Sessions is a path to removing special counsel Robert Mueller and trying to end the probe.

Sessions resigned from the Trump administration's Justice Department on Wednesday, just after midterm election results began to roll in.

Several hours after announcing the new AG via Twitter, Mr Trump was once again condemning the Mueller investigation.

However, he indicated in a resignation letter that he had been pushed from the role.

A personal connection to a Mueller witness is unlikely to sway Whitaker or the White House when it comes to recusal, as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein supervised the probe despite being a witness himself.

Sessions had previously tried to resign twice before, but Trump refused the resignations, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Sessions has been an adversary of Trump's since March 2017 when he rescued himself from the Russian Federation probe. The complaint was filed over a $25,000 campaign contribution Bondi received from Mr. Trump through his foundation in 2013, around which time Bondi's office was being asked about alleged fraud at Trump University.

Mr Sessions also announced the US President's decision to rescind protections for young adults brought into the country illegally as children.
