'El Chapo' Trial Set to Begin in NY

USA prosecutors say that as the head of the Sinaloa Cartel since 2003, Guzman directed the movement of multi-ton shipments of drugs including heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine across borders and into the United States.

Traffic in Brooklyn will be more chaotic than usual this week, as court proceedings against notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera begin at a Brooklyn Federal Court on Monday.

Guzman, who was captured in 2016 after tunneling his way out of a maximum securiy Mexican jail, was brought to New York City in January 2017 to face murder and drug conspiracy charges.

"I don't know why it's called the 'El Chapo, '" he said. "I think this dope situation in Southeast Asia is being run by the Triad of Asia".

One of Mexico's most notorious drug lords will go on trial in the USA later on Monday.

The former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel was extradited to the United States from Mexico early a year ago.

The long-awaited trial of Guzman, who prosecutors believe hired assassins to knock off rivals with a string of accused violent acts to protect the cartel, will start with the jury pool arriving answering a lengthy questionnaire, according to the New York Post. But at what price? "Probably not. The machine keeps rolling", says Rob Heroy, a North Carolina lawyer who has defended other Mexican drug barons. Last year, there was a record 29,000 murders in Mexico.

It is alleged that he spent a quarter of a century smuggling more than 155 tonnes of cocaine into the United States. In 2016, an average of 174 Americans died every day from drug overdoses.

The trial is set to begin Monday with jury selection.

U.S. district court judge Brian Cogan will preside over the process behind closed doors.

The judge has ordered the jury to remain anonymous and partially sequestered. "This prosecution demonstrates that we will apply all available resources to dismantle the leadership of unsafe drug cartels, wherever they operate, and will not rest until we have done so'". These ordinary men and women will determine whether Guzman―the diminutive father of two whose nickname means "shorty"―is guilty or not of 11 trafficking, firearms and money laundering charges. The Mexican drug lord is accused of running the world's most powerful drug cartel. Prosecutors say the Sinaloa Cartel, named for Guzman's home state, smuggled more than 200 tons of cocaine into the United States.

Guzman pleads not guilty, but the government has presented so much evidence - more than 300,000 pages and at least 117,000 recordings - that the defence complains they haven't had time to review it all. Some are expected to testify under aliases.
