Amazon Plot Twist: 2 Cities Will Split The 2nd Headquarters

In total, Amazon received proposals from 238 cities a year ago and reduced the list down to 20 finalists in January.

If Amazon does officially name Queens as a location for its next headquarters, the move could help NY establish itself as a technology hub.

"As we documented in a study last April, the Crystal City and Long Island City subsidy offers are among the many HQ2 bids that remain completely hidden", said Good Jobs First, a nonprofit that tracks corporate subsidies, in a statement.

One last thing: Amazon is one of the most insular, secretive, and uncharitable companies I've ever encountered. The company was never going to have that sort of outsize impact on NY, which has more than 10 times the population of Seattle, but the company's impact would be even more diluted now. An Amazon spokesman declined to comment. There's been intense competition to win over the company, with some throwing around billions of dollars in tax incentives. At the time, Bezos said he expected "HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters".

Dallas, Long Island City in NY and Arlington near Washington, D.C. are all among the finalists with which Amazon is holding advanced talks, one of the people said on condition of anonymity.

A source close to negotiations told NY1 that Cuomo is willing to go to Seattle next week to try to close the deal. He said winning over Amazon would give an economic boost to the entire state, and joked that he was willing to change his name to "Amazon Cuomo" to lure the company.

Adding to the confusion stirred by the Washington Post and, The Wall Street Journal reported November 4 that aside from Northern Virginia, Amazon is also engaged in late-stage talks with New York City. Jed Kolko, the chief economist at job site Indeed, said that choosing NY and the D.C. area would "be a much less radical move than many imagined" and another example of "rich places getting richer".

"Amazon's decision to locate part of its HQ2 to Long Island City is great news for our region as many of their employees will choose to live in less expensive homes and apartments in Nassau and Suffolk counties while bringing back their disposable income to spend in our downtowns supporting local businesses", Kevin Law, president and CEO of the Long Island Association, said via email.

Boyd says Northern Virginia always has been an HQ2 frontrunner and would represent a "safe choice" for Amazon. Earlier this year, Amazon unveiled plans for an office expansion in Boston's Seaport District, promising 2,000 new technology jobs by 2021 in fields including machine learning and robotics. Dubbed HQ2, the new facility - or facilities - will cost at least $5 billion to construct and will create as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs over the next 10 to 15 years. He noted that Denver is already now struggling to handle its enormous growth and an influx of Amazon employees could have further exacerbated the problems we see in housing and traffic. That list of finalists for Amazon's second headquarters had been culled from 238 communities that had submitted proposals to host the company's new offices.

Asked for comment Monday, a spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Commerce said the Department was aware of the Journal report but added: "As you know from our previous replies on this topic, we do not comment on active economic development projects, until a company makes public its site location decision". Bruce Harrell, the president of our City Council, even signed an executive order officially applying Seattle to be Amazon's HQ2, which was pretty embarrassing and made us seem like someone taking a breakup especially poorly.
