Diablo Immortal's Announcement Booed At BlizzCon

As many Blizzard fans were expecting a full fledged Diablo sequel instead of a mobile game, the rough response from the fans is not unwarranted. The game is set between Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction and Diablo 3 and deals with the aftermath of the shattered Worldstone and humanity's fight against it's corrupting power and the evil that would control it. In time-old internet fashion, they've resorted to a flurry of mocking and angry threads across Twitter and Reddit, as well as smashing that dislike button on YouTube.

Blizzard has today announced that their classic RTS game Warcraft III is getting remade. "With their incredible passion for Diablo and proven mobile expertise, the development team has spawned an ultra-responsive and breathtakingly lovely mobile game, and we can't wait for players to get their hands on it".

Specifically, Blizzard said Diablo Immortal would feature large, "shared outdoor zones" where players could explore the overworld and encounter other players online.

Diablo Immortal will be available on Android and iOS and for those that want to try out the game before its release, Blizzard is accepting applications for future beta tests. "At Blizzard, we don't announce things until we're ready". It's why we make games and why we've made games for nearly three decades now-and why our community is so passionate about our franchises.

If you're a Diablo 3 fan and haven't been living under a rock these past few months then you are probably aware of the upcoming Switch release to kick off BlizzCon 2018.

Adham, though, feels like he and his team did the best they could.

"We love 'Diablo"," Cheng said in the lead-up to the announcement. "The truth is that we have multiple Diablo teams working on multiple unannounced Diablo projects even after announcing [Immortal]". Existing custom maps will be playable in Reforged, and players will be able to use the new matchmaker to find partners or opponents for traditional melee and custom games. I rarely mention that sort of backlash in RPS posts because I think it's mostly newsworthy not as a rallying cry of sticking it to The Man but rather as a demonstration of petty and bad aspects of our games culture.
