Kate Middleton wears Jenny Packham to Imperial War Museum

The Duchess of Cambridge has paid a very poignant visit to the Imperial War Museum in London, where she learnt about her ancestors who fought and died in the First World War.

Kate Middleton stepped out looking radiant on Wednesday in London at the Imperial War Museum.

According to royal watchers, the Duchess of Cambridge's uncharacteristic fashion risks of late are signs of a sea change for the mother-of-three, who is said to be asserting herself in the role of future Queen consort, while her brother-in-law Prince Harry's wife Meghan takes over as "princess in training".

Francis Martineau Lupton, the Duchess's great-great-grandfather, had five children. Lieutenant Lionel Lupton was killed in 1916, having served with the 28 Brigade Royal Field Artillery, and was 24-years-old.

"The King realises that this is the third beloved son you have given in your Country's cause, and His Majesty trusts that you may be granted strength and comfort in the further sorrow which you have been called upon to bear", reads the letter from the Keeper of the Privy Purse at Buckingham Palace. Kate will also see a telegram (bottom left) announcing that the body of Major Francis Lupton, Kate's great uncle, had been found.

Armistice Day is November 11 in England, and many people sport poppy pins during the month leading up to it.

Cape Town - It's not all just tinsel and tiaras for commoners who marry into the royal family - it seems there's a lot they have to give up.

Her visit to the museum is her second official royal engagement this week after she attended the Coach Core Essex program in Basildon with Prince William on Tuesday.
