Djokovic reaches Paris Masters quarterfinals

Nadal was forced to withdraw from his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro in early September with a knee injury.

Serbian Djokovic lost his top ranking to Andy Murray after the 2016 ATP Masters 1000 event in the French capital but has fought his way back to the summit this year.

Djokovic cruised through to the quarter-finals after Dzumhur retired while trailing 6-1, 2-1.

"I enjoyed it, I feel, in terms of tennis, better than what I thought one week ago, but in the last few days I started to feel a little bit abdominal pain, especially when serving".

"I understand you guys want to go in depth about it, but please respect that I'm in this tournament and I have to focus on every match and try to get as far as I can". Djokovic and Nadal will both attempt to become five-time year-end World No. 1s at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 11-18 November.

"Reflecting on what I've been through in the previous year, it's quite a phenomenal achievement", said Djokovic, who won Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the US Open this summer.

Canada's Milos Raonic has also pulled out of his second-round match against Roger Federer with a right elbow injury.

Djokovic opened his Paris Masters campaign with an easy 7-5, 6-1 win over Joao Sousa on October 30.

"It's going to be a tough one".

Federer defeated Italy's Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3 as the Swiss great moved three wins away from his 100th career title.

Djokovic can regain top spot from Rafael Nadal this week if he betters the Spaniard's performance in the French capital, where the Serb is a four-time victor of the indoor tournament.

When asked about the London finals he added: "I am very sorry but I can not answer you".

"I'm obviously not happy to see Rafa being injured and pulling out from the tournament in this final race for top rankings", said Djokovic.

Fifth seed Marin Cilic cruised into the third round with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Nishikori overcame Adrian Mannarino of France 7-5, 6-4.

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev has booked a second round berth at the Paris masters after beating Francis Tiafoe.
