Trump refutes report that China is spying on his cellphone calls

Trump's aides have repeatedly warned him that his cellphone calls are not secure and that Russian spies routinely eavesdrop on the conversations, but they say the president still refuses to give up his cellular phones, the Times reported, citing officials.

The snarky reply signals to the ban on the use of Huawei devices by U.S. government agencies, signed into law by President Trump himself back in August.

As for President Trump, he reacted just as everyone expected by going to Twitter and calling the NYT report "soooo wrong".

Trump reportedly has three iPhones, but only two of them are equipped with security features that have been added by the National Security Agency - one of the secure phones is strictly intended for tweeting, and only over Wi-Fi networks.

The agencies were said to have learned of the eavesdropping from people inside foreign governments and through intercepting communications between foreign officials, the report said.

The New York Times reports that American agents believe China is in fact listening in to the President's private calls. They say Huawei may have ties to the Chinese government or ruling Communist Party, increasing the risk of spying.

A representative for the U.S. Secret Service declined to comment on the reported episode when reached by The Washington Times.

Haberman, one of the authors of the report, noted that Trump also used the word "boring" to try to downplay a previous Times story about the vast extent to which his father had fuelled his wealth with tax-avoidance schemes. The Chinese, the official said, correctly perceive that Mr. Trump places tremendous value on personal relationships, and that one-on-one meetings yield breakthroughs far more often than regular contacts between Chinese and American officials.

China, in particular, hoped to discern what Trump thinks and who shapes his thinking as the two countries fight a protracted trade war. Because some of the business magnates with whom the president regularly speaks have interests in China, the nation's government is attempting to use other business figures to lobby them to nudge the president in a direction they deem beneficial to China.

And she suggested a handset from one of China's biggest phone manufacturers might be more secure.
