UAE passport surges up global rankings of 'most powerful'

The Henley Passport Index ranking is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association, which has the world's largest database of travel information.

Having gained visa-free access to Myanmar earlier this month, Japanese travelers now enjoy visa-free and visa-on-arrival access to 190 destinations, pushing Singapore, which has visa-free and visa-on-arrival access to 189 countries, to second place on the index.

The index, by Henley & Partners, a citizenship and planning firm, showed Japan to have the most powerful passport on the planet.

Thailand ranked 68th, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 77 countries.

This year, UAE citizens have gained visa-free access to several new countries including Ireland, Canada and China and overall it has secured more new visa waivers this year than any other country.

It is updated in real-time, as and when visa-policy changes come into effect, according to Henley and Partners.

Tim Geschwindt, Analyst at S-RM Intelligence and Risk Consulting, says the agreement also speaks to Russia's shifting position within the worldwide community: "The country is continuing to seek improved bilateral relations, as well as trade, investments, and tourism ties, with new partners".

With neither having gained entry to any new jurisdictions this year, it seems unlikely that either will soon reclaim the No.1 spot they held in 2015.

Russian Federation received a boost in September when Taiwan announced a visa-waiver, but the country has nonetheless fallen from 46th to 47th place due to movements higher up the ranking.

Looking at the number of countries giving a visa waiver, Taiwan comes in at No.29, with Japan crowning the list.

China also climbed by 14 positions to 71, with access to 74 destinations since 2017.

The UAE has made the most remarkable ascent on the Henley Passport Index, from 62nd place in 2006 to 21st place worldwide now.

Iraq and Afghanistan continue to sit at the bottom of the Index. Newcomer Moldova, which is due to launch its CBI programme in November, has climbed 20 places since 2008.
