PlayStation PSN Name Changes Coming Soon

After years of asking for such a feature, Sony has announced that players will soon be able to change their PlayStation Network IDs. It will begin as part of the PlayStation Preview Program for those who have signed up for the betas for previous PS4 software updates.

If you were to run into multiple issues and wish to undo the change, you will be able to revert the change and go back to your original name. You will also be able to display your old ID along with your new one if you want friends to recognize you, however you can only enable or disable this feature when you make the actual name change - after that it's locked. However, unlike the previous setting, this option is only available while applying the change and not after. You can't change that after completing the name change, Sony said.

The PSN name change feature will go live "early next". This will be useful if you encounter problems with an older game or application, or if you simply decide that you liked your old name better than the new one. Reverting back to an old ID will resolve most issues caused by the ID change.

The first time PSN users change their Online ID it will be free but after that PSN users will charged.

Twelve years after debuting its PlayStation Network online service alongside the PlayStation 3, Sony is finally giving users the ability to change their PSN Online ID.

KitGuru Says: I've been wanting to change my name for quite some time after my online moniker was inexplicably denied.

While all PlayStation 4 games published after April 1, 2018 will be compatible with this new feature, anything published before that date is not guaranteed. While it'll work with every PS4 game published after April 1st, 2018 and should be compatible with the "large majority" of popular PS4 games released before then, some PS4, PS3 and PS Vita games might produce "issues or errors". There'll be a short wait after that, with the feature set to officially roll out for all users sometime in early 2019.
