Floodwaters rise in North Carolina as Florence bears down

Although the storm's current path and potential damage remain hard to predict, catastrophe risk modeler Risk Management Solutions (RMS) has projected insured losses resulting from the hurricane of between US$15 billion and US$20 billion, additionally noting that Florence will be the strongest hurricane to make landfall in North Carolina since 1954.

"A storm surge of 10 feet above normal levels was reported by the National Weather Service office in Morehead City, North Carolina", reported the National Hurricane Center, citing transportation officials in that state.

Hurricane Florence has weakened to a Category 1 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, with little change in strength expected before it moves inland on Friday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory.

After appearing headed toward the North Carolina-Virginia border at one point, Florence shifted south and is now taking aim at the Carolinas. "There is probably not a county or a person that will not be affected in some way by this very massive and violent storm".

The Miami-based center says the center of the eye moved ashore with top sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), making Florence a Category 1 hurricane in terms of wind intensity.

One resident from Myrtle Beach, a popular SC destination for tourists, told CNN: "We're well prepared".

"Tropical storm conditions are expected to spread inland across the remainder of the warning area through Saturday", the NHC said.
