Betting suspended on The Everest horse race before Sydney Opera House show

The barrier draw will be released via a short light show on the sails of the Opera House which has cause considerable controversy since Friday.

The draw for the race, being held at Royal Randwick this Saturday, was held in confidence by Racing NSW stewards and kept under wraps until the results were revealed as part of the light show.

The government sparked outrage by overturning the decision of Opera House management, which had rejected the promotion of the race on the grounds that it breached its guidelines.

Racing NSW says bets have been suspended "to avoid any perceived integrity risk", with waging operators to be informed later this evening when they can recommence betting on the annual racing event.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys took the decision to conduct the draw on Tuesday morning prior to the barrier draw function to circumvent any security risks as the fallout from use of the Opera House to promote the race continues. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian later overruled Herron and gave Racing NSW most of what was being asked.

The barrier draw for The Everest, a thoroughbred horse race run over 1,200 metres, was projected onto the Opera House amid growing backlash over using the landmark as a billboard. He cut her off immediately as she attempted to explain the heritage listing of the Opera House and then said he would be calling the Premier.

Alan Jones has this morning apologised on his 2GB Breakfast show for comments he made in an interview with Opera House CEO Louise Herron last week.

At 7.40pm when the famous sails were first lit up, people lining the building's forecourt also began to shine beams of light from torches onto the images in the hopes of obscuring the message.

'This is one of the biggest events of the year why not put it on the biggest billboard Sydney has, ' he said. I think because they'd assume all of the rough and tough people go to the horse racing.
