Hussain was charged in 2002 with helping people illegally obtain driver's licenses and eventually became an informant against his co-conspirators in the license scheme.

There has been no immediate comment from the limousine company. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, four of the company's vehicles have been deemed unsafe and taken out of service since 2016, and the company's vehicles had an 80 percent failure rate at vital safety inspections.

More than 37,000 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the USA in 2017, according to federal data. Instead, a close-knit group of family and friends are dead.

Steenburg's husband Axel Steenburg also was killed.

She had worked at St Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam and was studying for her master's degree in special education.

"It's tragic. frightful. I can't even begin to even explain", Valerie Abeling told The Washington Post, confirming that her 34-year-old niece, Erin McGowan, and her new husband, Shane McGowan, 30, were among the dead. They got married just four months ago. "We're just talking layers of tragedy". A fourth sister, Allison King, was also among those killed.

"My heart is sunken".

"I don't know how people move forward from it", said Andrea Orokos, sister-in-law of Rich Steenberg. But before Amanda Halse received her sister's reply, she died in the crash. She's mourning the loss of two mothers. Police have not released any of the victims' names and said late Saturday they were notifying the next of kin of those who died. "They'd do anything for you, and they were very close to each other".

Douglas said three of the sisters were with their husbands.

They were headed to an upstate New York brewery, officials said, when the vehicle ran a stop sign at a highway intersection in Schoharie, New York, about 40 miles (65 km) west of Albany, police and the NTSB said.

The collision is said to be the deadliest transport accident in the United States since 2009.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Apple Barrel Country Store thanked emergency responders for their actions in the aftermath of the "horrific" accident. "I believe the jaws of life were here on the side of one of the fire trucks", local Bridey Finnagen said.

"I heard this loud bang".

"I don't want to describe the scene", she added. I saw a lot of people up here at the Apple Barrel out in the parking lot.

"I heard some screaming".

The US National Transportation Safety Board was investigating.

The vehicle was an after-market stretch limousine, according to an official.

Local media reported that the vehicle sped down a hill and crashed into bystanders in Schoharie County, New York.

The crash was so catastrophic, it stunned even veteran safety experts.

"Throughout the next few days, NTSB investigators will work on scene to thoroughly document the scene and to gather what we call the perishable evidence", NTSB chairman Robert Sumwalt said.
