Jodie Whittaker draws big as first female Doctor Who

With the dawning of a new era of Doctor Who, we've been given a premiere episode that had a lot of emotional weight to it.

There's one thing immediately apparent when watching the first episode of the new Doctor Who season - Jodie Whittaker is having the best time playing The Doctor. These are the best overnight ratings the show has had for a regular episode, i.e. one that is not a holiday special or anniversary event, since the Series 4 finale in 2008, io9 reports. The show returns with a new showrunner in Broadchurch's Chris Chibnall, a new Sunday night timeslot and, of course, a brand new Doctor.

At the centre of the episode was one of the Doctor's new companions, Ryan Sinclair, who talked about having dyspraxia. The first episode of Doctor Who's eleventh season, "The Woman Who Fell To Earth", debuted yesterday on BBC America, where it can be streamed free of charge.

The fact that a Time Lord can periodically regenerate into another body was itself only invented to allow the show to sidestep the failing health of William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor on TV.

"Jodie is already my favourite Doctor", said another.

Apart from the Doctor, who's still disorientated after the regeneration, quipping that she was "a white-haired Scotsman" only half-an-hour earlier, the transformation is batted aside in favour of jumping straight into the action.

While Whittaker was honored to get the role, she noted that the casting announcement seemed like a bigger deal than it was because "gender becomes immediately irrelevant within the show because the Doctor is the Doctor". Are you excited to see where Whittaker and Chibnall take the story next? The episode itself is about change - the ways in which we move forward in the face of events that change everything about who we are, the divide between the person you are and the person you're going to be.
