New Macs have a software lock that prevents unauthorized repairs

But now it is trying to lock down MacBook Pro and iMac customers from getting the device repaired from third-party vendors.

Specifically, Motherboard reports that the documents list which kinds of MacBook Pro and iMac Pro repairs require this configuration software to be run afterward.

As far as the MacBook Pro, this affects instances where the parts to be replaced cover its display assembly, logic board, top case (i.e. keyboard, touchpad, and internal housing) and Touch ID. For the most part, that's really only affected the mobile side of Apple. You'll also need a functioning system, which is also necessary to restore an iMac Pro.

"For Macs with the Apple T2 chip, the fix process is not complete for certain parts replacements until the AST 2 System Configuration suite has been run". This essentially bars third-party repairs, and would also make it hard to fix said machines once they are classified as vintage machines. This restriction applies to 2018 MacBook Pros and the iMac Pro, both of which are equipped with the T2 security chip.

A document sent to Apple's Authorized Service Providers - seen by MacRumors and Motherboard - shows that the T2 security chip that's built into modern Macs is being used to prevent authorized repairs from being carried out.

The Apple Service Toolkit 2, according to a report by Vice, only works with an active connection to Apple's cloud-based Global Service Exchange server with a valid Apple login. Failure to perform this step will result in an inoperative system and an incomplete fix.

As of now, 19 states in the U.S. have proposed legislation regarding right-to-repair rules, but none of them have passed a bill that prohibits the use of proprietary diagnostic software. But the news is a concern for consumers who may be looking to skip Apple and fix their devices solo without any help.

Earlier this year, Apple refused to replace troublesome iPhone batteries if the devices passed a diagnostic test - but later relented and offered unconditional replacements.

In any case, owning a MacBook Pro or iMac Pro just got became more expensive, due to the added maintenance costs of having to go to Apple authorized service centers for even the smallest issue. AppleCare is much like insurance which you may never actually use - which ends up putting "free" money in Apple's pockets.
