Man dies from 'brain-eating amoeba' after visiting surf resort in Texas

A New Jersey surfer is dead after contracting a rare and deadly "brain-eating amoeba" weeks after he swam at a water resort in Texas.

The CDC says that it isn't possible to contract Naegleria fowleri by drinking contaminated water.

It's unclear how Stabile contracted the brain-eating amoeba, but the BSR Surf Resort shut down Friday while the CDC conducts an investigation, Kelly Craine, Waco-McLennan County Public Health District spokesperson, told the Waco Tribune. Four out of 143 known infected individuals in the U.S.in the past 55 years have survived.

When his mother went to check on him in the early afternoon of Monday, Stabile could not get out of bed and could not speak coherently and he was rushed to hospital.

According to the CDC, Naegleria fowleri causes the onset of primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a brain infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue and be fatal. "We hope to have results by the end of the week", a spokeswoman for the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District told the broadcaster on September 30.

Samples from the pool have been collected for testing, with preliminary results expected later this week.

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs around the world. An obituary in The Press of Atlantic City describes Stabile as an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, surfing and snowboarding.

Stuart Parsons, the park owner, said in a statement that it will remain closed until the testing is completed. Other symptoms can include stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, seizures, and hallucinations. Those who contract PAM usually die within one to 18 days of showcasing the disease symptoms.

He also said he and his workers' "hearts and prayers" are with family and friends of Stabile and the New Jersey surf community.

The park is voluntarily closed until the test results come back. Parsons added that his park follows all CDC "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri".
