Kerala nun rape case: Accused Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal arrested, say reports

Sister Alphonso, secretary to the present Mother Superior was caught on camera slamming the nun who accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal of rape.

After the interrogation, the police had said verification was required in matters so far placed before the investigation team and that will be completed by Friday morning.

Kottayam Superintendent of Police Hari Sankar said the bishop's questioning was likely to be over on Thursday.

Hours after Mulakkal, accused of repeated rape and sexual assault, appeared before the Special Investigation Team for interrogation, the state's DGP Loknath Behera said the investigating officer will decide on whether to arrest him once the examination got over.

Meanwhile, Mulakkal has maintained that the allegations against him were a "cooked up story to wreak vengeance" for the actions taken by him on various complaints received against the nun. The case against the bishop was registered after the nun met the police chief with a complaint that the bishop had raped her multiple times at the Kuravilangad Mission Home, between May 2014 and September 2016.

A team of Kerala Police headed by DSP K Subhash had travelled to Jalandhar to question the Bishop regarding the case.

The case comes at a time when the Christian community, which accounts for 19 percent of the state's population, is reeling under an erosion of trust as sexual abuse cases involving the clergy pile up. The protests gained momentum after members of the civil society, actors and social activists joined the protests.

A group of Catholic nuns launched a rare street protest nearly a fortnight ago in Kochi, the state's financial hub, demanding justice for the nun. One of the nuns, while slamming the police's inaction in nabbing the accused said, "The police have repeatedly taken the statement of the victim nun, but they have taken Franco Mulakkal's statement only once". However, their move did attract some strong criticism as The Missionaries of Jesus congregation, on September 10 condemned the protest by the five nuns. "We can not crucify an innocent soul based on such allegations", reported News18. The nun had claimed that most of the times it was unnatural sex.
