Gainesville has first positive test of West Nile Virus

The California Department of Public Health as of September 13 reports that West Nile virus has been detected in 21 counties, the release said.

Two deaths related to West Nile virus have been reported to state health officials this year, on each from Glenn and Yuba counties. The West Nile Virus is most commonly spread by mosquitoes. Most people who become infected with West Nile virus do not have any symptoms, but about one in five people who become infected develop a fever with other symptoms such as headaches, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. He spent 17 days in the hospital in August as doctors did tests to determine the cause for his extreme illness.

City Manager Barry Sullivan says the West Nile positive mosquito was trapped on the 500 block of Davis St, across Lindsay St. There are no reported cases on the east side of Harris County, Marquez said. Symptoms can include high fever, disorientation, coma, muscle weakness and paralysis. In rare cases, West Nile virus can be more serious and even fatal.

Amherst Selectmen's Chairman Dwight Brew said last week that he talked with the town health officer Scott Tenney after the report came out.
