Captain Cook's missing HMS Endeavour 'discovered' off USA coast

LONDON-It was the ship that sparked the colonization of an entire continent.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of Cook's departure from England on the Endeavour.

Endeavour became notable for being part of Cook's travels, which started Britain's links with Australia and New Zealand, ultimately leading to their colonisation. That's where the Endeavour, unfortunately renamed Lord Sandwich by a subsequent private owner in its later years, is known to have been scuttled during the American War of Independence in 1778.

A replica of Captain James Cook's three-masted bark "Endeavour" enters Sydney Harbor, Australia on December 18, 1994.

The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) and the Australian National Maritime Museum teamed up to search for the Endeavour and will announce their results at an event on Rhode Island on Friday. Now, what the Sydney Morning Herald calls "one of the greatest maritime mysteries of all time" may have been solved: the ship's final resting place. Now, after a 25-year effort to pinpoint its remains among 13 sunken vessels, The Age reports that the Endeavour might have finally been identified.

The wreckage of the famous ship "Endeavour", belonging to the legendary captain cook apparently found in the 17 thousand kilometers from the coast of the United Kingdom, near Rhode island.

Abbass said she was hopeful the ship could be excavated next year, in time for the April 2020 celebrations marking 250 years since Cook's arrival at Botany Bay.

"They've got five boats there and Endeavour is probably the largest and so really at the moment it's buried in the mud", Mr Moran said. "They took everything off of the ships and sunk them right before the Battle of Newport". "They have been disturbed by shipping moving over them, by things like having anchors dragged through them", he said.

"Basically what we know is the size of the Endeavour hull [and] a ship of that type uses certain dimensions of timber", he told the Guardian. Most of the ships that were scuttled in Newport in August 1778 were built of American or Indian timbers [but] the Endeavour was built in the north of England of predominantly oak. A year later, they landed on the eastern coast of Australia.

Investigators will also look for evidence that the wreck belongs to a prison ship-the last usage of the Endeavour was for carrying prisoners of war.

The Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission is also the custodian of the Newport Harbor shipwrecks. "It'll be bits of wood and vessel that might be recovered".

In 1999 former Rhode Island Attorney-General Sheldon Whitehouse legally ensured Rhode Island's ownership of the historic Newport fleet, including the Lord Sandwich.
