Audi Unveils Electric Model 'e:tron'; India Launch Next Year

For Audi, e-tron is the first fully electrically powered series production model from the brand with the four rings. Known as the e-tron, Audi's electric SUV will take direct aim at the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I Pace. Testing agencies across Europe replaced NEDC with WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) past year.

A raft of colour schemes and trim combinations are available, including open-pore ash wood that can't be optioned on other Audi models. The Tesla is rated under EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency), which is said to be more accurate than the WLTP cycle. It will be launched in the 2019-20 fiscal year. If the customer selects the adaptive cruise assist, the system can also brake and accelerate the electric SUV predictively. For $1,000, buyers can reserve one, and be among the first to get it when deliveries start in the second quarter of next year. It matches the Tesla Model X in some key metrics on paper: price, equipment, estimated performance, and estimated battery range. The Mercedes-Benz EQ C, the first nameplate in the automaker's all-electric sub-brand, is a 200-mile range crossover that delivers 402 horsepower using an 80-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. If more power is summoned or if the system detects wheel slippage, the e-tron will automatically activate its front electric motor.

The e-tron interior will seem familiar from Audi's latest redesigned models, such as the new Q8, including a configurable instrument cluster and the new two-touchscreen multimedia and control system with 10.1-inch and 8.6-inch screens. This feature is likely to be limited to Audi's all-electric vehicles.

In Europe, the e-tron will offer an option of cameras instead of conventional mirrors to give drivers a view to the rear. The vehicle is sleek with sharp, trademark-Audi front grills and a continous running LED taillight.

At the rear, the signature slim tail lamp signature is fully-connected across the width.

Audi has been heralding the launch of the e-tron SUV for some time, but until Monday it had not shared many details of the vehicle.

The team behind the light show in San Francisco is the same behind the now official Guinness World Record for simultaneously flying the most unmanned aerial vehicles set back in July. The e-tron offers a 705 Watt Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System with 16 speakers and an amplifier.

Audi dealers, particularly those from California where Tesla has made significant inroads, cheered the e-tron at Monday night's crowded event. The e-tron's front seats also have an optional massager. However, the e-SUV will emit a sound to inform that you're ready to roll.

The electric SUV is powered by two powerful electric motors that are locally CO2-neutral and virtually silent. It did, however, estimate zero-to-60-mph performance of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 124 miles per hour.

The Audi e-tron, a five-passenger mid-sized SUV, is expected to be delivered to showrooms in the first part of 2019.

Audi's first all-electric vehicle, the, is ready to plug in.

The E-Tron is engineered for both AC and DC charging support.
