Premier League stars nominated for FIFPro World XI

Global players' union Fifpro have released their shortlist for this year's World XI, with the final team announced at the Best Fifa Football Awards in London on 24 September.

Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva of Manchester City, along with Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic, return to the top 15 after missing out in 2017. United quartet David De Gea, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku feature, as do Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren and Virgil van Dijk.

However, United's Alexis Sanchez lost his place on the list following a tricky debut season at Old Trafford, with former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now of LA Galaxy, also dropping out.

Liverpool's Van Dijk, the most expensive defender of all time at £75 million, helped the Reds to the Champions League final last season.

Sergio Busquets, Casemiro, Philippe Coutinho, Eden Hazard, Isco, N'Golo Kante, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Arturo Vidal are the other midfielders on the list. The defender scored three goals in three games for Colombia at the World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also nominated for firing Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League, prior to joining the Old Lady over the summer.

Spain (nine) and France (eight) are the countries with the most players represented on the list, with European players making up 71 per cent of the total players selected.

Barcelona are kings in Spain, Madrid in Europe, over the last few years, and the two clubs are doing battle again in the FIFPro awards.

Despite interest from Manchester United and Lyon, in the end, it was Everton who won the race and secured his services.

Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe are also among those in the shortlist after winning a domestic treble in France.
