US Open champion Djokovic: ‘I owe Federer, Nadal’

However, speaking after winning his 14 Grand Slam title, Djokovic admitted that the chair umpire changed the course of the game.

Novak Djokovic has won the first set over Juan Martin del Potro in the U.S. Open men's final, 6-3. He was my childhood idol.

Djokovic's most hard opponent this tournament has been the heat and humidity, so Sunday's cool and wet conditions, resulting in the roof being shut on Arthur Ashe Stadium, were perfectly to his liking.

The 31-year-old, who triumphed in NY in 2011 and 2015, sealed his third title at the final Slam of the year with a hard-earned straight-sets win over the Argentine.

"It's not about losing", said Nadal, after his retirement against del Potro.

Djokovic added: "I would like to congratulate Juan Martin for what he's done in the last four, five years".

Djokovic had lost five previous finals at Flushing Meadows, but he was determined to make amends for his lack of trophies in NY as his defensive ability combined with his ruthless prowess saw him break in the fourth game, although Del Potro was not in the mood to give up so easily as he hit straight back.

For Del Potro, it was a heartbreaking experience coming in just his second Slam final, nine years after he was crowned US Open champion.

"There was always part of me that believed I could come back relatively quickly to the level of tennis that I once was playing", Djokovic, 31, said before Sunday's match.

After seizing an early break in the second set, Djokovic suddenly found himself on the run, dropping three straight games before he dug in to salvage a service hold in a 20-minute marathon game that went to deuce eight times.

"Life showed me that it takes time for good things, it takes time to really build them, for things to fall into place".

Roger Federer, beaten by Del Potro in the Indian Wells final in March, was impressed by del Potro's willingness to reinvent his game.

"There is a lot of significance of me being now shoulder to shoulder in terms of Grand Slam wins with him".

"This might sound amusing, but my nickname is Nole". Of course I'm sad to lose but I'm happy for Novak as well. "I'm very motivated to keep trying to win these titles".

The effort took its toll on a suddenly weary-looking Del Potro as a 95-minute set was claimed by Djokovic in the tiebreak.

"I repeat, the second set was a milestone, the audience got excited and turned on, but the experience from the match with Federer helped me to get it all easier". I had my corner, as well. "I really wish him all the best and I know he's going to stand here again with the champions trophy". The runner-up, Serena Williams, is back in the top 20 at No. 16, after being No. 26 before the U.S. Open - and outside the top 400 as recently as May, following the former No. 1's time away because she had a baby.
