Twitterati clap back at ‘sexist, racist’ Serena Williams’ sketch

National Basketball Association star Stephen Curry says Serena Williams acted with "grace and class" during her controversial U.S. Open final loss to Naomi Osaka.

On the contrary, he praised Williams for showing "grace and class" in a situation in which Naomi Osaka, the victor in two sets, was overshadowed.

An Australian cartoonist has come under withering criticism for portraying tennis superstar Serena Williams using - what Harry Potter author JK Rowling described as - "racist and sexist tropes".

"I would say a championship match in terms of high-level talent on the court between those two ladies ... obviously Naomi deserved to win and she played awesome", Curry told Omnisport.

"Because the young player outplayed her in the first set, I think pressure got her more than anything". Williams, who was on the ropes against Osaka, went on to lose, 6-2, 6-4, and was fined $17,000.

The original cartoon depicts Williams stomping on her tennis racket, with a pacifier nearby, and the umpire asking her opponent, Naomi Osaka, "Can you just let her win?"

Curry was speaking as part of the 2018 Stephen Curry Asian Tour powered by Under Armour, unveiling SC's new shoes "UA Curry 5".

"He never took a game from a man because he said 'thief, '" Williams said.

The second and third violations earned Williams a point penalty and then a game penalty, giving Osaka a 5-3 second set lead that effectively gifted her the title. She was disqualified from a semifinal match at the 2009 US Open for threatening a lineswoman.

"He needed to tell Serena he can't apologise, he did the right thing there, he's got to be the boss - but all he had to say to Serena is: 'I am not attacking your character'".

Alternatively, USTA head Katrina Adams said male players badger "the umpire on the changeovers and nothing happens".

Issues of sexism, officiating double standards and adverse playing conditions have dominated the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open, raising uncomfortable questions and prompting authorities to promise a review of existing policies.

According to the Times, umpires are also not pleased about the tournament's reaction to the controversy around Alize Cornet, who was given a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct for taking off and changing her shirt on court.

For the first time since the match, Ramos has spoken up, telling Tribuna Expresso in his native Portugal that "I'm fine, given the circumstances".

In the absence of any official support for Ramos until Monday, it was left to two former senior umpires, Mike Morrissey and Richard Ings, to defend the Portuguese official.

The umpiring community also had Ramos' back, as they have threatened to boycott Williams' matches.

Meanwhile, tennis umpires are also considering forming a union as they feel no one is standing up for them.
