Henry Cavill's Superman is leaving the DC Universe

Henry Cavill's Superman is leaving the DC Universe

On Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that Henry Cavill will no longer be playing Superman in any future DC movies.

"Today was exciting", Henry Cavill posted along with a video of himself wearing a "Krypton Lifting Team" t-shirt.

Warner Brothers' DCEU, or the DC Extended Universe, has had its share of problems.

Warner Bros. has since issued a statement in response to the reports, adopting the classic "nothing to see here" approach while stating their relationship with Cavill is still intact. Other films on the horizon are the upcoming "Shazam!" with Zachary Levi, "Wonder Woman 1984", due out in November 2019, and Ezra Miller in a stand-alone movie for the Flash.

Given that Johnson was adamant about Cavill appearing in his Black Adam film, could Warner Bros. and Cavill's reported separation put Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's pending Black Adam film at risk?

Warner Bros. will focus on a Supergirl movie instead.

It appears to be a period of change in Henry Cavill's career.

The recent talks began as WB wanted to get Cavill to make a cameo in Shazam, which arrives on April 5.

Warner Bros plans for the DC movie universe going forward seems to have undergone a lot of rethinking, so some recasting is not completely out of the blue. A source told The Hollywood Reporter, "Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors".

Cavill is the third actor to prominently play DC's live-action Superman on the big screen since Christopher Reeve reinvigorated the role in the '70s. The actor is packing in more ways than one, with a supporting role in this year's Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and an upcoming starring role in Netflix's new series TheWitcher. A solo Batman movie is also in development which may or may not star Ben Affleck back in the title role.
