Apple to reveal new iPhones and Apple Watch

Details of the new phones were found in publicly viewable code contained in the so-called sitemap of Apple's website, which was subsequently removed.

Apple shares were down 1.3 percent at $221.20 in early trading on the Nasdaq.

Google is also expected to announce the third generation version of its Pixel smartphone when it holds its own smartphone event in October.

Apple has remained mum about revelations planned for the event at its spaceship campus in Silicon Valley, but the timing fits its pattern of annually introducing iPhone updates.

The company invited analysts and members of the media to its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., to unveil its new gadgets for the fall Wednesday, marking the second year it's launched new iPhones from the Steve Jobs Theater.

Of the other devices, the Apple Watch 4 is also expected to come with a lot of improvements over the predecessors including the display size, more real estate, click-free buttons and more.

Apple first added dedicated on-device machine learning to last year's chipsets, but this new generation is supposed to be around 9 times faster that last year's model while using less energy.

The world's most valuable tech company wants users to upgrade to newer, more expensive devices as a way to boost revenue as global demand for smartphones levels off. It is predicted that Apple products will be available to buy in the first week of October.

According to leaked images from a Chinese mobile network, that were spotted by GSMArena, the new devices could come with dual-sim capabilities.
