US Open: Djokovic beats Nishikori to enter final

Nadal has been forced out of tournaments due to left and right knee problems over the last decade, withdrawing before 2009 Wimbledon and the 2012 Olympics and during the 2010 Australian Open.

At the conclusion of his third round game at the US Open, Rafael Nadal was reluctant to talk about his knees, insisting that it was not the time for that conversation.

But Djokovic will not under-estimate the 29-year-old who was two sets to love ahead of Nadal in the semi-finals on Friday when the world number one retired with a knee injury. "I got depressed for couple of months also", Del Potro told reporters.

Looking to retain the title he won past year and cap another hugely successful season, Nadal must instead focus on rehabilitation after pulling the plug two sets into his semi-final against Del Potro.

Gauff won the French Open girls' title and was trying to become the first American to win two Grand Slam girls' singles titles in the same year since Jennifer Capriati in 1989. "That's just a demoralising turn of events for Del Potro", tennis legend John McEnroe said in commentary for ESPN.

Nadal, bidding for a fourth title in NY and 18th major, had spent the best part of 16 hours getting to the semi-finals.

"I didn't know if I [would] be a tennis player again or not".

"Well, counter to that, I guess: big return and some good backhands", he said.

The 31-year-old, who was beaten by Nishikori at Flushing Meadows in 2014, sealed victory on his second match point to improve his head-to-head record against the Japanese to 15 wins from 17 meetings. "I hate to retire, but staying one more set out there, playing like this, would be too much for me". "But I'm here. I'm excited to keep surprising the tennis world, as I did with myself".

"I am sad for him but I'm also happy to do my best".

Either del Potro or Djokovic will add to their Flushing Meadows trophy haul, and it should be an epic as both players will have plenty in the tank after relatively straightforward semifinal victories. "Even when he dropped his ranking and started to, you know, work his way up, but we all knew that he has a capacity and a quality to get to the point where he is at the moment".

"I waited as much as I can. I didn't know if I will be a tennis player again or not", Del Potro said Friday.

"He's playing better everything".

A tired and wounded world No.1 Rafael Nadal has retired from his US Open semi-final while trailing Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (7-3) 6-2, sending Del Potro back to the Flushing Meadows final for the first time since his 2009 triumph.

"I think I was just exhausted from last couple matches".

Victory on Friday would put the 31-year-old into his eighth final in NY.

Meanwhile, Del Potro reached his second Grand Slam final after waiting nine years after a wrist injury that threathened his carrer.
