Trump promises a 'real book' on his White House

But Woodward says in his book there was an even more risky tweet that wasn't sent, declaring that Trump was withdrawing the family members of US troops from South Korea.

NBCJournalist Bob Woodward appeared on the Today show on Monday to discuss his new book on the Trump White House, "Fear".

President Trump on Monday morning ripped Bob Woodward's new book as a "total joke", threatening that he'll write the "real book" about his presidency. This country does some things in the intelligence world which are so important to protect the country they are astonishing.

Woodward continued, "He jeopardizes things in the economy by doing things that experts - '99.9% of the people say don't do tariffs". "I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations", reads the subhead of the piece, which ostensibly sought to reassure the public that well-intentioned people such as the author had the public's back.

Woodward's book paints a harrowing portrait of the Trump presidency, based on interviews with administration officials.

Kelly is quoted calling Trump "an idiot", and Mattis is quoted saying Trump has the understanding of "a fifth or sixth-grader", but they've said they didn't make those statements.

Woodward said he wouldn't have used the op-ed column from a senior Trump official that The New York Times published last week.

Several prominent figures in the book have denied quotes that Woodward attributes to them.

- Mr Trump after Twitter doubled its character count for a single tweet from 140 to 280: "It's a good thing, but it's a bit of a shame because I was the Ernest Hemingway of 140 characters".

The tweet never was sent because of a back-channel message from the North Koreans that they would view it as a sign the U.S. was preparing to attack, according to CBS.

Vanity Fair reporter Gabriel Sherman says Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner immediately pointed to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly- said to have worked through his deputy chief Zachary Fuentes- as the writer of the anonymous op-ed.

"Barely two days later, the New York York Times took the extraordinary step of publishing an anonymously penned op-ed by a "senior Trump administration official" who claimed to speak for an internal resistance movement that "[wants] the administration to succeed and think that many of its policies have already made America safer and more prosperous". Dems can't stand losing.

"Have you ever done one of these books, know you talked to a source and the source comes out publicly after the publication and says, 'That's not true, '" Guthrie asked. The book claims that even after deleting the tweet, Trump raised the idea of evacuating military families from South Korea with Senator Lindsey Graham, who also told Trump that it was a risky idea.

In one of the scenes described in the book, soon after taking office, Trump asked the Pentagon for a plan to launch a preventive military strike against North Korea, while criticising the high cost of protecting South Korea.

But he told NBC that until Trump he had "never seen an instance when the president is so detached from the reality of what's going on".

"Frankly, it's sad and pathetic that a gutless anonymous source could receive so much attention from the media", she said.
