Trump administration will close the Palestine Liberation Organization office in DC

Trump administration will close the Palestine Liberation Organization office in DC

According to the Wall Street Journal, national security adviser John Bolton is expected to make the announcement on Monday.

"The United States will always stand with our friend and ally, Israel", Bolton will say today, according to Reuters.

The Trump administration initially announced it would close the office previous year for the same reason, but later reversed its decision.

The national security adviser is also planning to threaten the International Criminal Court in the same prepared remarks, saying the US will impose sanctions against the organization if it investigates the USA and Israel, the Journal reported.

The State Department said the US step - the latest in a series targeting the Palestinians - came after a review of the office of the Palestine Liberation Organization centered on the fact that no "direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel" are underway despite previous warnings. He unloaded on the "illegitimate" International Criminal Court and warned its judges they will pay a stiff price if they go after USA troops in Afghanistan, reports the New York Times.

The Palestinians have said they will not buckle to Mr Trump's pressure and will continue to push on with their bid for an ICC investigation against Israel.

The Palestinian Authority says it will not abandon its principles following the USA decision to close the Palestinian Liberation Organization's office in Washington.

He called upon the ICC to "open its immediate investigation into Israeli crimes".

Palestinian officials on Monday condemned the Trump administration's decision to shutter the Washington, D.C. office of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)-part of a broader effort to block International Criminal Court (ICC) probes into USA or Israeli war crimes-as "crude and vicious blackmail", and vowed to continue calling for ICC investigations. To the contrary, PLO leadership has condemned a USA peace plan they have not yet seen and refused to engage with the USA government with respect to peace efforts and otherwise.

"We will not cooperate with the ICC". Today, he'll say that "for all intents and purposes, the ICC is already dead to us".

Those indicted by the ICC, which was formed in 2002 by the Rome Statute, have included Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi and his son Saif Al-Islam for crimes against humanity, Sudan President Omar al-Bashir for war crimes in Darfur, and Ugandan guerrilla leader Joseph Kony for crimes against humanity and war crimes. The official reason given was its lack of effort in producing a peace settlement, but the State Department also made it clear that it's payback for the ICC move. The organization opened the office in 1994 and went on to join the ICC after receiving observer state status at the United Nations in 2012.

The condemnation of the ICC added to the White House's rejection of many supranational institutions and treaties the president does not believe benefit the United States.

Trump's decision to close the offices is just one of several punitive measures taken against the Palestinians in recent weeks.

"We have been notified by a US official of their decision to close the Palestinian mission to the US", Palestine Liberation Organisation secretary-general Saeb Erekat said in a statement.

"On this Earth, we don't recognize any authority higher than the U.S. constitution".

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert speaks during a briefing at the State Department in Washington, August 9, 2017. We will let the ICC die on its own.
