Boris Johnson calls for tax cuts for a ‘dynamic’ post-Brexit Britain

Mr Johnson quit the Cabinet in opposition to her Chequers plan which would see the United Kingdom remain closely aligned with European Union rules on goods.

Ahead of a potentially hard Conservative Party conference, Mr Hunt said the Prime Minister's efforts to achieve the best outcome for Britain "will be greatly strengthened if we are united behind her".

Britain's former foreign secretary Boris Johnson sits in the stands during play on the second day of the fifth Test cricket match between England and India at The Oval in London on September 8, 2018. "Comparing the Prime Minister to that isn't amusing".

Boris Johnson, Britain's former foreign secretary, who resigned over differences on Brexit strategies with Prime Minister Theresa May in July, has caused a fresh controversy by accusing her of wrapping a "suicide vest" around Britain and handing the detonator to Brussels.

Alistair Burt, tweeted: "I'm stunned at the nature of this attack".

"I don't think analogies like that are particularly appropriate".

"Doing blue on bue just leads to psychodrama", David Cameron's communications chief Craig Oliver is said to have remarked during the Brexit campaign.

Backbench Tory MP Nadine Dorries said Johnson's critics were "terrified of his popular appeal".

He said: 'We have managed to reduce the great British Brexit to two appalling options: either we must divide the Union, or the whole country must accept EU law forever'.

Mr Tugendhat replied: "That's exactly my view and that is why I say I have made my view very clear".

Her preferred plan sparked Mr Johnson's departure from her cabinet. "We look like a seven-stone (44kg) weakling being comically bent out of shape by a 500lb (226kg) gorilla", he added.

Johnson - who announced his divorce this week from Marina Wheeler - also said the nation had "put our own heads deliberately on the block".

With Johnson and his allies "intent on using the party conference to comprehensively derail the Chequers plan, also thus dealing a significant blow to May, the battle lines are set to become further entrenched in the coming weeks", says The Guardian.

"The only deal that we have got on the table - that's the Chequers deal", he said.

In 2004, Johnson was accused of having a years-long affair with journalist Petronella Wyatt.

Many of Johnson's supporters hope his increasingly vocal criticism of May signals that he will launch a leadership bid while other Conservatives suggest his Mail article was exclusively to distract attention away from his marital difficulties.

Mr Javid said he did not expect a no-deal outcome, adding: "I'm glad the police and other experts are looking into this and thinking what might happen in a no-deal scenario".

The Sunday Times has reported that Mrs May's aides wrote a 4,000-word "dirty dossier" on Mr Johnson in 2016, exposing a "catalogue of lurid allegations" against him.
