Elon Musk smokes weed on Joe Rogan podcast

The turmoil at Tesla reached a fever pitch, as the news that two senior executives are leaving Elon Musk's electric-car maker emerged just hours after he smoked marijuana during an hours-long interview streamed live online.

"This caused me to reconsider my future", Morton said. He added that he still believed in Tesla, that "I have no disagreements with Tesla's leadership or its financial reporting".

Bloomberg also reported Tesla's chief people officer Gaby Toledano would not return from a holiday just over a year after joining.

Tesla shares fell more than 6 percent on Friday, after top executives resigned and CEO Elon Musk appeared to smoke pot in a video.

Elon Musk found himself in the middle of another controversy on Friday, after he smoked weed and sipped whiskey during a rather unusual Thursday night podcast hosted by comedian Joe Rogan - with some suggesting the eccentric billionaire had acted irresponsibly.

"You probably can't because of stockholders", Rogan joked, to which Musk reasoned, "I mean it's legal, right?"

Shares shot up after Musk's buyout tweets. In May, two executives, a VP and a product director departed Tesla's energy unit.

Tesla is now worth roughly $US21 billion less than it was in the immediate aftermath of Musk's infamous "funding secured" tweet.

Concerned investors drove Tesla shares down 7.7 percent in pre-market trading to $259.35.

Musk asks, "Is that a joint?"

Denning took aim at Musk's Thursday appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, which included a segment in which Musk sounded more like a high college student than the CEO of a massive tech conglomerate.

"No, I'm getting text messages from friends saying, 'What the hell are you doing smoking weed?'" Musk replied.

The spot on one of the most popular podcasts in the US marks Musk's first appearance in a public forum since he stunned the financial world last month with his short-lived effort to take Tesla private. "I don't find that it is very good for productivity".

Almost a dozen top executives have left Tesla this year.

That move, described in a company blog with several other promotions as a result of board and management discussions, gives Musk a seasoned auto industry veteran to lean on at a time when some investors have called for a new chief operating officer. In July, he tweeted that a British diver who helped with the rescue of a Thai soccer team trapped in a cave was a "pedo guy".

"If he wanted to prove them wrong with actions, he would delete Twitter, drop the Unsworth conversation and not use recreational drugs in a public setting". Musk asked Rogan to which he responded, "Totally legal".
