'DREADFUL MISTAKE': Trump aide George Papadopoulos gets 14 days in prison

George Papadopoulos, a former campaign aide to President Donald Trump, was sentenced to 14 in prison Friday for lying to federal investigators as a part of the ongoing Russian Federation investigation carried out by special counsel Robert Mueller.

US District Judge Randolph Moss said that Papadopoulos' deception was "not a noble lie" and that he had lied because he wanted a job in the Trump administration and didn't want to jeopardise that possibility by being tied to the Russian Federation investigation.

George Papadopoulos, 31, told the court in Washington DC he was a "patriotic American" who made a mistake by lying. "I was young and ambitious".

Defence lawyer Thomas Breen said his client was affected by Mr Trump's cries of "fake news" ahead of the interview and was torn between wanting to cooperate with investigators and wanting to remain loyal to the President.

"This was not a noble lie", Moss said.

Prosecutors working for Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller said Papadopoulos undermined their investigation and deprived them of a chance to ask a professor of diplomacy based in London how he knew Russians had obtained the "dirt" on Trump's rival, Hillary Clinton, in the form of thousands of emails.

He was also the first to detail a member of the Trump campaign having knowledge of the Russian efforts to meddle while it was going on.

Those issues are now at the heart of Mueller's sprawling investigation, which increasingly threatens Trump's inner circle and the president himself.

Friday was his first public court appearance since he pleaded guilty in October 2017 to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation while the case was still sealed.

Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, calling the Mueller probe a "witch hunt".

He had actually met them after joining Mr Trump's campaign. Jeff Sessions "appeared to also like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it".

In his time with the Trump campaign, the delicacy of Papadopoulos's mission to broker a meeting between Trump and Putin was not always reflected in his conduct.

George Papadopoulos, 31, pleaded guilty in October to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about key details of his conversations with a London-based professor who had told him the Russians held dirt, in the form of thousands of emails, on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Weeks later, stolen Clinton emails were leaked over the internet by what United States intelligence chiefs now say were Russian intelligence actors.
