Buzz Aldrin 'proud to be American' as Armstrong film ignores USA flag

It included two photos from the moment he and crew mate Neil Armstrong erected the flag in a moment seen around the universe.

Aldrin, 88, who was the second man to step on the moon behind Armstrong, posted pictures of the flag-planting from the historic 1969 mission and added the hashtag "Proud to be an American".

Although Armstrong died in 2012, his sons, Rick and Mark, spoke out in support of the new film and said it was not anti-American.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters next month.

"It's unfortunate. It's nearly like they're embarrassed at the achievement coming from America, I think it's a awful thing", Trump told The Daily Caller in an interview.

The film's creators and Gosling himself have said the reasoning behind the omission of the American flag is because the moment viewed as a human achievement more than an American one, and have suggested Armstrong did not believe he was an "American hero".

'This story is human and it is universal.

"Of course it celebrates one of the greatest acts of America and Americans and humanity and mankind".

"The filmmakers chose to focus on Neil looking back at the earth, his walk to Little West Crater, his unique, personal experience of completing this journey, a journey that has seen so many incredible highs and devastating lows", the men added.

Weekly Standard editor at large Bill Kristol called it a "foolish and pernicious falsification of history".

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times published Sunday, Chazelle said he has been "surprised" by the controversy because there are multiple historical moments he opted to leave out of the movie. The "La La Land" filmmaker was motivated to portray the risks and challenges of the moon mission through the eyes of Armstrong.

"The flag being physically planted into the surface is one of several moments of the Apollo 11 lunar EVA that I chose not to focus upon", director Damien Chazelle said in a statement. "To address the question of whether this was a political statement, the answer is no", he told the Associated Press. But conservative commentators slammed the filmmaker's decision to skip a shot of Armstrong planting the American flag.

Film critics enthusiastically responded to the film, rocketing "First Man" to early lists of possible Oscar favorites.

Mr Aldrin was reportedly not invited to an advanced screening of the film, which is due for release on October 12 in the US.
