For Google, this is just another step in bridging the gap between online ads and offline sales. However, their decision not to buy something online may be inconsequential.

Mastercard and Google have reportedly reached a secret deal that will enable Google to track Mastercard user buying habits both online and offline, and use the data for ad targeting and attribution.

According to Bloomberg, this deal was finally brokered between the two companies after four years of negotiation. A trove of Mastercard data that Google bought for millions of dollars is, in part, used to make the analysis, according to the report.

The report noted that Mastercard has also improved its data and analytics capabilities through its consulting arm, Mastercard Advisors.

"Before we launched this beta product previous year, we built a new, double-blind encryption technology that prevents both Google and our partners from viewing our respective users' personally identifiable information", the company said in a statement. She said Google doesn't have access to the personal details of its partners' credit and debit cards, and, in turn, it also doesn't share the personally identifiable information that it does have. Most nowadays some of the ompanies spend more on online ads than TV ads, newspaper ads and more. The shopper doesn't buy anything.

Reportedly, for the a year ago, Google has been tracking the offline buying habits of Mastercard holders with the intent to correlate them to interactions with ads online.

Google will record whether you have clicked an online ad and then purchased the same item within 30 days of clicking on the ad.

Google says all the data is anonymised and that users can opt out of ad tracking by switching off the web and app activity control.

A Mastercard spokesperson also declined to comment on the Google partnership directly but pointed out that Mastercard often shares transaction history with merchants and service providers.

The report notes that many of Mastercard's two billion card holders are unaware of the arrangement between Google and the credit card company.
