AAP releases new vehicle seat recommendations

Parents, take note: A group of pediatricians said Thursday that it will remove age milestones from its auto seat policy statement guidelines for children riding in vehicles. As the Chicago Tribune reports, parents are now recommended to keep their kids in a rear-facing auto seat until they outgrow it.

Once children have graduated from rear-facing to forward-facing auto seats, the updated AAP recommendations also encourage parents to keep their children in the forward-facing vehicle seats until they physically outgrow them, which tends to be when they reach 65 pounds. "If you have a choice, keeping your child rear-facing as long as possible is the best way to keep them safe". This seating position provides the most protection to vulnerable body parts such as the head, neck, and spine. "And that's really why we want kids to ride rear-facing".

Natasha Young, a certified technician for the non-profit organization Safe Kids Worldwide, told CBS News that parents often graduate their children to front-facing seats too early. Families can call to make an appointment.

Beforehand, the AAP said formative years needs to be transported in a rear-going through automotive seat till now not much less than age 2. When children ride forward-facing, their bodies are restrained by the harness straps, but their heads - which for toddlers are disproportionately large and heavy - are thrown forward, possibly resulting in spine and head injuries.

Specifically, this means that children are recommended to use rear-facing auto seats for as long as their height and weight are within the seat's set limits, even if the child is older than 2 years old. When a child is approaching one of those limits, it is time to think about transitioning to the next stage. Over the last 10 years, 4 children under 14 and younger died each day.

In an interview with NBC News, Hoffman said he's aware parents enjoy checking off these milestones for their kids, but he recommends taking a step back to make sure they're adhering to the academy's guidelines.

"If you're going to make a kid sit until they're four years old and they had known nothing different is one thing, but when you take a kid that's two and a half, turn them around and then three months later tell them they have to sit backwards is going to make for a really long and miserable vehicle ride", said Hunyor.
