NASA works to contain pressure leak on International Space Station

The leak was discovered at around 7 p.m., (EDT) Wednesday, by flight controllers in Houston and Moscow.

The crew aboard the International Space Station is dealing with a unique workplace hazard, but NASA says nobody is in danger.

A NASA spokesman said it was premature to speculate on whether the three might have to return to earth early if the leak, even as small as it is, can not be stopped.

On Thursday morning, an investigation showed the leak appeared to be on the Russian side of the space station. "Flight controllers are working with the crew to develop a more comprehensive long-term fix", NASA added.

NASA and Russian space officials stressed Thursday that the six astronauts are in no danger.

The Soyuz MS-09 carried Sergey Prokopyev, German astronaut Alexander Gerst and NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor into orbit June 6.

NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos operate the orbiting space lab along with the European Space Agency, Japan's JAXA and the Canadian Space Agency.

"Regarding the path the Russians are heading down, I would really like to see a caste of that somehow on the ground before we just do a test up here and see if it's gonna work", Feustel said, adding he would like 24 hours. When the crew awoke this morning, mission controllers both in Houston and outside of Moscow attempted to pinpoint the leak.

Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos, both from Russian Federation. Flight controllers, meanwhile, monitored the cabin pressure while working to come up with a better long-term solution.

A cause for the breach was not given but this is not the first time the ISS has suffered a leak. Feustel said the crew was testing a plug that was held in place with tape, and a Russian crewmate reported that the results looked promising.
