Australia’s new Prime Minister Morrison announces cabinet

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has announced her resignation from the cabinet.

Morrison was sworn in as Australian prime minister - the seventh in 11 years - on Friday after the Liberal Party's conservative faction led by Dutton launched a revolt against Turnbull.

New Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison selected his cabinet on Sunday after winning a three-way leadership battle on Friday.

Morrison has a one-seat majority, but will face a by-election when Turnbull resigns from parliament, which ABC news reported could be as early as later this week.

Just days after Tony Abbott helped orchestrate the demise of Malcolm Turnbull from the prime ministership, he is campaigning for his sister to replace the dumped leader in his plum Sydney electorate.

Ms Bishop issued a statement saying she will remain in parliament.

Dutton will return to Home Affairs, but his former super-portfolio will be split, with Dutton focusing on cyber security, law enforcement, border of protection and security agencies.

A leaked WhatsApp chat between some Liberal members, revealed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Sunday, showed them pushing against voting for Bishop as a tactic to back Morrison, who finally emerged as the victor.

She was elected deputy Liberal leader under opposition leader Brendan Nelson after the 2007 poll and was handed the shadow employment and workplace relations role.

Bishop did not say whether she planned to stand in the next federal election in May 2019.

"It was pretty lonely", the former lawyer said a year ago, adding that she would suggest ideas which were ignored until copied by her male colleagues.

Australia's new prime minister has visited the drought-stricken Outback as he turns his focus away from his government's internal drama.

Speaking to The West Australian, the former Foreign Minister acknowledged she was aware of claims that MPs had used an online messaging app to make her supporters back Scott Morrison over her.

In June, lawmakers overwhelmingly passed bills to crack down on foreign interference after Turnbull said change was needed to stop reported meddling by China and other nations in the nation's government, media and universities.

"It's been a pretty tumultuous time and I think Australians would welcome the fact that that period of time is over and it should be over", Mr Morrison told reporters in the town of Quilpie.

"Government stability is being restored, we are getting on with the job", he said.
