OU No. 7 in Preseason AP Top 25

Saban has a decision to make at the QB position, as the Crimson Tide now have two studs on the roster; Tua Tagovailoa, who won the College Football Playoff championship game for Bama with a second-half comeback and overtime touchdown pass, and Jalen Hurts, who has led the Tide to the national title game in each of his two seasons as a starter.

No. 1 in the preseason poll from 1985-87, the Oklahoma Sooners were the first. Clemson was ranked No. 2 earning 18 first-place votes, while Georgia, Wisconsin and Ohio State rounded out the top five.

The Sooners, who are coming off a third straight Big 12 title and a second College Football Playoff appearance in the last three years, accumulated 1,173 points in the poll. They received 42 of 61 first-place votes, including my own. Every other spot in the poll is filled by a major-conference program.

The Top 25 is determined by voter rankings for college football's best teams. Those are the only preseason ranked teams on West Virginia's schedule.

As noted by Brett McMurphy, a high AP preseason ranking has been a pretty accurate predictor of national-championship success: Since 2004, only No. 22 Auburn in 2010 and No. 11 Florida State in 2013 won titles when ranked outside the preseason top 7.

Alabama is making its sixth appearance at No. 1 in the AP's preseason poll.

- Mississippi State enters the season at No. 18, its highest preseason ranking since entering the 1981 season at No. 14.
