Johns Hopkins Ranks No. 3 Among Best Hospitals In The U.S.

The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix was rated as one of the best adult hospitals in the country and two other area facilities received national recognition in U.S. News and World Reports' annual rankings, which were released Tuesday.

The Mayo Clinic has once again topped a list of the nation's best hospitals.

Hospital rankings are determined by scores tallied in 16 fields of specialized care as well as their strength in treating nine bellwether procedures and conditions such as heart failure and lung cancer surgery. For one thing, the analyses include Medicare claims containing ICD-10 codes, which replaced ICD-9 last fall. For example, a new process measure for hip and knee replacements rewards hospitals with relatively low rates of nonautologous blood transfusions.

At one point, after the family used a ruse to get their daughter her out of Mayo, they apparently removed their cell phone batteries to keep the police off their tails as they made their way to another hospital in South Dakota.

In Minnesota, Abbott Northwestern was named the state's "Best Hospital" after Mayo.

Rankings by third-party organizations such as U.S. News are important as patients become more proactive about shopping for healthcare, but they can also can also be misleading or draw unfair comparisons.
