Pakistani flag flies at Calgary city hall to celebrate Independence Day

It's the country's 71 birthday and the 72 Independence Day.

Speaking to a gathering of expatriates, Khan said that the day was a reminder of the struggle by the Muslims of the subcontinent for a separate homeland "where they could live their lives with freedom and dignity". Commandant Pakistan Naval Academy Commodore Waqar Muhammad was the chief guest at the ceremony at the Quaid-i-Azam mausoleum.

He said despite significant progress, Pakistan has yet to reach its destiny and that a consensus about national objectives is imperative to achieve the goals.

Among the most poignant ones was the tweet by former Pakistan cricket team captain Shahid Afridi from across the Wagah Border.

During the day, gun salutes were held in Islamabad and the four provincial capitals.

Saddique expressed his gratitude to the Kingdom for supporting Pakistan and its people, saying: "Saudi Arabia has a special place in the heart of every Pakistani".

Addressing the main event of Independence Day at the Convention Centre in the federal capital, he said August 14 rejuvenates our spirit. "Our country is a blessing for us".

Felicitating the nation on Independence Day, the president said this is a day of true celebrations. He also urged the global community to raise their voice so that the Kashmir people could get their inalienable right.

That's according to report by Dawn, one of Pakistan's leading English dailies.

The recent election had strengthened the democratic norms in Pakistan with the third successive peaceful transfer of power, he said.

Independence Day celebrations at Pakistan Navy educational institutions were also held where school children presented tableaus on national songs and declamation contests were held highlighting the importance of Independence Day.
