The smoke layer reaching the East Coast is about a mile high, the NWS says. It's burning along with the largest fire in California state history, the Mendocino Complex Fire which is over 302,086 acres.

Rob Gore, a firefighter from the Australian capital of Canberra, said it makes for good relationships that Australians often fight fires in North America and that Canadians and Americans regularly fight fires in his country. This scene, captured by a webcam overlooking California's Holy Fire, offers a sober glance of the state's horrific wildfire season, which is far from over.

More than 14,000 firefighters are spread out across the state as well as army personnel, inmates, the national guard, reinforcements from other states and from New Zealand and Australia.

Some inmates even assisted in the effort.

Ziggy Torok and Starla Affatati watch helplessly Thursday as the flames of the Holy Fire close in on Torok's home in the Rice Canyon neighborhood of Lake Elsinore, Calif. "You know, us firefighters help protect the community".

Milligan said he was so wary of Clark that he avoided altogether going to the area of the remote Orange County canyon where the 51-year-old Clark lives, he said. It is still spreading.

Firefighters under Cal Fire's command have helped OR authorities fight a fire near the California border and responded to a blaze that broke out this week in Orange County and burned a dozen cabins.

He has also been charged with threatening neighbors - one of whom lost his cabin in the fire - and resisting arrest.

McGlover also faces a life sentence if convicted. His arraignment was again continued on Friday to August 17.

"That's a lie", Clark interrupted the judge while charges were read.

At first, Clark would not show his face, his lawyers saying he feared reprisals against his family.

"May I pay for that?" Can I post bail?

"I had no idea what he meant", Milligan said, adding that Clark sent emails to other people in which he talked about burning something.

He was scheduled to appear in court that day, but refused to leave his cell.

"They took me away last time for no [expletive] reason, I told them that I'd been vandalized", Clark said as the fire burned around him. Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, allegedly wrote to a fire chief two weeks ago, CNN reported.

He claimed during the interview that he was the target of threats from the MS-13 gang.

More than 21,000 people have been evacuated in and around the city of Lake Elsinore, where flames and billowing smoke rose into the sky at the edge of the city of 60,000 near the Santa Ana Mountains.

Weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and relative humidity below 15 percent created conditions conducive to extreme fire behavior as well as heat illnesses for the firefighters, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

"Firefighters continue to battle the blaze around the clock", the national forest tweet said.
